Negative Space

Negative Space

Negative Space. 'Negative space' is a fascinating concept. Margaret was familiar with it from the design world (she's an interior designer and former church communications director), but it was new to me as we began exploring Mount Pisgah's visual identity (logos, branding, etc.). If it's new to you as well, here's a primer:

Negative Space is the intentional use of empty or quiet space to shape meaning. Sometimes it's not what is added that gives something its power; sometimes it's what is left open, unseen, or unfilled that brings both power and meaning. In good design, negative space isn’t absence; it’s purposeful restraint that allows what matters most to come into focus. As they say where I'm from: that dog will hunt!

Most of us interpret long, difficult seasons as the absence of God's presence and help. We ask, “Where are you? Why won't you help? Why did you leave?” because we believe these seasons happen because God is asleep at the wheel.

What if we're wrong?

What if those 'negative spaces' are actually pregnant with meaning and purpose, laboring to give birth to humility, trust and knowledge? What if learning to recognize and inhabit negative space is the very thing that opens us to encounters with God that can only happen there?

This Sunday, we begin a new journey—in more ways than one. Together, we’ll explore Scripture in a way that can help us make sense of the negative space we’re in now… or prepare us for the one that may be coming. Either way, I can't wait to get started with you!
