There is a mystical sense...
There is a mystical sense in which by faith we are connected to Christ and we find our life in Christ. His nourishing love oozes through our cells and we produce leaves, new shoots, and fruit – but only because of our connection with Him.
Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you (John 15: 4-7).
You can’t live out the life Jesus has for you if you are not connected with Him. If you have a bunch of pruned branches they are not going to produce leaves and fruit and growth -- no matter how much you water them or give them sunlight.
We have been commissioned to GO and bear fruit. There is a strong missional aspect of this passage that we often overlook - Go - get out there where you’re needed and start bearing fruit. You see, abiding in Christ – remaining connected in Him - isn’t just a Jesus and me thing. There is an additional purpose that we become fruit distributors to world around us; to our family, our community, and our workplace...even to the ends of the earth.
In this sermon series you will discover that as you remain connected to Jesus your love for Him and His love for you naturally extends to others around you.
As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you (John 15:9-12).
